These steering column and shaft are used for connecting with the parts made from quality alloy steel, thus ensuring desirable toughness and hardness in them. These form an integral part of steering system.

In construction terms, steering column shaft assembly in an automobile comprises upper shaft and lower shaft coupled by universal joint featuring a yoke secured to one of shaft end and cage pivoted to other shaft end accommodated within yoke. With yoke and cage having aligned bores, these receive a set of trunion pins to provide pivot connection between yoke and cage. This portion of trunion pins provided in yoke bores are formed with screw threads engaging threaded walls of bores. Further, the threaded connection between trunion pins and yoke also support pins against axial movement as well as ejection from bores during operation of shaft assembly, especially during heavy torsional loads.
